Research cutoff: September 23, 2026. Shopify had reported second-quarter 2026 results and provided a third-quarter outlook. This article uses confirmed company disclosures and conditional scenarios; it does not invent an earnings date or stock-price target.
Shopify enters October with broad growth across GMV, revenue and gross profit, plus stronger free cash flow. The central question is whether that pace can remain economically attractive as merchant solutions become a larger part of the mix and the company invests in payments, international expansion and AI-enabled commerce.
The confirmed Q2 baseline
Shopify’s official Q2 release reported gross merchandise volume of $115.567 billion, up from $87.837 billion a year earlier. Revenue was $3.583 billion versus $2.680 billion, an increase of 34% reported and 33% in constant currency.
Gross profit increased to $1.708 billion from $1.302 billion. Operating income was $488 million compared with $291 million. Free cash flow reached $654 million versus $422 million, and free-cash-flow margin expanded to 18% from 16%.
These results show scale, but investors should avoid relying on a single growth percentage. GMV measures merchant activity, revenue depends on product mix and pricing, and gross profit is closer to the economics retained by Shopify after direct costs.
Subscription and merchant-solutions mix
Subscription-solutions revenue was $802 million, while merchant-solutions revenue was $2.781 billion. Merchant solutions can grow with GMV, payments penetration and value-added services, but may carry different gross-margin characteristics from subscription revenue.
Monthly recurring revenue increased to $221 million from $185 million. MRR can help reveal the recurring subscription base, although it does not capture all merchant-solutions economics. Investors should track merchant additions, plan mix, retention, take rate and the attach rate of payments, capital and other services.
GMV quality matters as much as GMV growth
GMV growth can reflect merchant expansion, consumer demand, geographic mix, larger enterprises or currency. October research should ask how much growth comes from durable merchant cohorts and whether payment penetration and gross profit rise alongside volume.
International growth can enlarge the addressable market while adding currency, localization, regulatory and payments complexity. Enterprise merchants may bring large volume but can negotiate different economics. Cohort retention and gross profit dollars therefore provide important context for headline GMV.
Free cash flow and cash-flow presentation
The 18% free-cash-flow margin was a material positive signal. Still, free cash flow should be reconciled with stock-based compensation, capital expenditures, working capital and merchant-related financial products over several quarters.
Shopify said that beginning in April 2026, cash flows related to merchant cash advances were classified within investing activities. Q2 included a net $37 million use of cash in investing activities from originations and repayments. Classification can change where cash appears without changing the underlying economics, so comparisons should use a consistent definition.
Merchant financing can deepen the platform relationship, but it adds underwriting, loss and funding risks. Review receivables, provisions, repayment behavior and concentration instead of treating financing volume as ordinary software revenue.
What Q3 guidance asks investors to verify
Shopify expected Q3 revenue growth in the low-thirties percentage range and gross-profit growth in the mid-to-high twenties. It expected operating expense to equal 33% to 34% of revenue, stock-based compensation of approximately $150 million and free-cash-flow margin in the high-teens to low-twenties.
These are management estimates, not achieved results. Compare actual revenue, gross profit and cash generation with the ranges when reported. If revenue grows faster than gross profit, investigate product mix, payments costs, incentives and geographic expansion before drawing a conclusion.
Three conditional October scenarios
Constructive: GMV and revenue remain broad-based, gross profit scales, free-cash-flow margin stays strong and merchant services deepen without disproportionate credit risk.
Mixed: volume and revenue grow rapidly, but merchant-solutions mix and investment keep gross-profit growth below revenue growth. Execution remains solid while valuation depends on sustained cash conversion.
Risk: consumer or merchant activity slows, payments economics weaken, international costs rise or financing losses increase. Rebuild the thesis from the next report rather than using an invented downside target.
