How the average stock price is calculated
Each purchase is weighted by the number of shares bought. A 100-share purchase affects your average more than a 5-share purchase.
Weighted average price = total amount invested ÷ total shares owned
Example: buying 10 shares at $100 costs $1,000. Buying another 20 shares at $70 costs $1,400. Your total cost is $2,400 for 30 shares, producing an average price of $80 per share.
What the result does and does not include
The calculator includes the quantity and price of each purchase you enter. It does not automatically include brokerage fees, taxes, dividends, currency conversion costs, stock splits, or shares already sold. To include a trading fee, add it to the total cost of that purchase before calculating its effective per-share price.
Frequently asked questions
Does averaging down guarantee a profit?
No. A lower average price reduces the price a stock must reach for the position to break even, but the stock can continue to fall. The investment thesis, company fundamentals, valuation, and position size still matter.
Should I include shares I already sold?
This calculator is designed for shares currently held. If you sold part of the position, use your broker’s cost-basis method or tax report because FIFO, LIFO, and specific-lot accounting can produce different results.
Can I use the calculator for crypto or ETFs?
Yes. The weighted-average formula works for stocks, ETFs, funds, and crypto assets as long as each row uses the same asset and currency.
Are my values uploaded?
No. The calculation runs locally in your browser and this tool does not submit the numbers you enter.
