What the September 10–11 releases changed

US inflation: August headline CPI increased 0.4% from July and 3.4% from a year earlier. CPI excluding food and energy increased 0.3% for the month and 2.4% over 12 months. Producer prices for final demand increased 0.4% in August and 5.4% over 12 months. These are published observations, not a prediction of the Fed decision.

ECB: the Governing Council raised the deposit facility, main refinancing and marginal lending rates by 25 basis points, to 2.50%, 2.65% and 2.90% respectively, effective September 16. The ECB said it remained data-dependent and did not pre-commit to a rate path.

Adobe: the company reported fiscal Q3 revenue of $6.76 billion, up 13% year over year, total ARR of $27.50 billion and operating cash flow of $2.52 billion. Adobe raised its full-year revenue and EPS targets. Reported results should be compared with expectations, valuation and the company’s stated risks rather than treated as a stand-alone buy or sell signal.

How to interpret the month’s headlines

A data release can affect markets through the difference between the result and what investors expected. A company can report higher earnings while its shares fall if the outlook disappoints. An unchanged interest rate can still accompany new guidance. Keep the reported fact separate from the proposed explanation of the market reaction.
