Research cutoff: September 13, 2026. Dollar amounts are USD per common share unless stated otherwise. This guide separates declared payments, calculations and unannounced future decisions.
Block trades under XYZ, not the old SQ ticker. Its 2025 annual report says it has never declared or paid cash dividends and does not expect them in the foreseeable future. This guide verifies no new 2026 or 2027 dividend schedule or stock-split announcement.
Old SQ research belongs to the current XYZ company
Block’s 2025 annual report identifies XYZ as the symbol for its NYSE Class A shares and ASX depositary interests. The 2024 filing package’s January 2025 supplemental indenture documents the NYSE symbol change from SQ to XYZ on January 21, 2025. A symbol change is not a stock split.
Older material may use Square, SQ or Block. Match the legal company and security before combining prices or corporate-action histories. H&R Block is a different business and must not be used as a source for XYZ’s dividend. Likewise, an ASX depositary interest and a US common share should not be assumed interchangeable without checking their terms.

The policy is a dated company disclosure, not an irreversible commitment never to pay. A future board decision could change it. Until then, a projected cash-income worksheet should not insert a quarterly amount simply because other financial-technology businesses have begun paying dividends.
What would change a 2027 shareholder outlook?
Our first trigger would be an actual dividend initiation with an amount and payment dates. The second would be a specific stock-split decision with a ratio and effective terms. The third would be a material change in capital allocation that affects per-share value, such as actual repurchases or issuance. These triggers have different consequences and should stay in separate columns.
An authorization to repurchase stock is not a promised distribution to each continuing shareholder. It permits purchases under the program’s conditions. A holder who does not sell into those purchases does not receive that budget as cash. Nor does a new authorization prove that every permitted dollar has already been spent.
A Block-specific cash-generation checklist
Our analytical framework separates seller activity from consumer financial services. Payment volume can grow without the same growth in retained economics. Review gross profit, operating costs and the cash required to serve customers instead of treating all top-line dollars as equally profitable.
Bitcoin-related transaction revenue requires particular care in comparisons. A large amount moving through a transaction business is not necessarily a similarly large retained margin. Separate customer activity from the value and risk of corporate Bitcoin holdings. A change in the market value of an asset is not the same event as recurring operating cash earned from customers.
Consumer lending and installment products introduce credit and funding questions. Evaluate losses, receivable collection and financing needs alongside product growth. Customer funds associated with settlement obligations should not be treated as unrestricted shareholder cash. Liquidity analysis must recognize the corresponding liabilities and the timing of settlement.
Review stock-based compensation and diluted shares together with repurchases. Reported growth at the company level may translate differently into growth for each share. Adjusted profitability can be informative, but exclusions need reconciliation to reported earnings and cash. Do not infer dividend capacity from an adjusted number without checking what it leaves out.
A practical downside test
Consider slower seller activity, weaker consumer engagement and higher credit losses while product investment continues. Ask how that combination changes recurring cash and financing requirements. This is an analytical sensitivity, not a forecast about a particular quarter or an allegation that losses will occur. It helps distinguish durable cash generation from one favorable period.
Stock-split arithmetic is not investment profit
If a hypothetical 2-for-1 split converted 100 shares into 200, the theoretical unit price would halve and the ownership interest would remain unchanged. The 2025 SQ-to-XYZ ticker change did not do this. A stock award to employees or a conversion between share classes is also not automatically a proportional bonus for all public investors.
No new 2026 or 2027 split ratio is verified in this guide. A forecast should not attach a date to a rumor or infer a corporate action from a chart. Use a dated issuer announcement to update the shareholder record; otherwise, keep the claim unconfirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Is SQ still the current NYSE ticker for Block?
The current ticker is XYZ. SQ is the former symbol.
Does a buyback provide a quarterly dividend to every holder?
No. Repurchases and cash dividends are different capital-return mechanisms.
